Bromsgrove-based Walter GB Ltd has introduced a new cutting-edge platform for parting off, grooving, copy turning, and groove turning with the launch of its Groov·tec GD 5011-P grooving system, alongside the GD26 cutting inserts. The system, comprising a robust toolholder and two-edged indexable inserts, stands out due to its patented double-serration profile, setting a new standard in precision machining.
The innovative serration profile ensures an extremely stable, positive-locking connection between the tool body and the indexable insert. This connection absorbs lateral forces effectively, preventing the cutting insert from being pushed out of alignment — a particularly beneficial feature when groove turning, widening grooves, chamfering, and parting off. The precision-fit serration not only maximises stability and reduces wear, but it also extends the life of both the cutting insert and the tool support, increasing the tool life by up to 50%.
Field tests conducted with customers have demonstrated that the Groov·tec GD system allows for significantly higher cutting parameters, thanks to the advanced serration profile and optional precision cooling. This, in turn, boosts productivity and throughput, offering a major advantage for manufacturers seeking higher efficiency.
The Groov·tec GD system is available in shank sizes ranging from 16mm to 25mm (5/8 to 1 inch) and insert widths from 2.5mm to 6mm, ensuring flexibility across a broad range of applications.
A notable highlight of the Groov·tec GD system is the new Tiger·tec Gold indexable inserts, specifically developed for grooving applications. These inserts are available in four PVD and three CVD grades, offering exceptional versatility for use in steel, stainless steel, difficult-to-cut materials, and cast iron. This makes the system ideal for applications demanding high process reliability and precision, such as highly automated production environments or large batch production runs.
In addition to its impressive cutting capabilities, the Groov·tec GD system offers significant tool life advantages, with manufacturers able to achieve up to 150% longer tool life compared to standard systems with prismatic clamping. Walter’s Groov·tec GD system is designed to meet the growing demands of modern manufacturing, offering reliability, durability, and outstanding performance.
