Abu Dhabi, UAE – Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), the largest industrial company in the UAE outside of oil and gas, has officially launched the construction of its groundbreaking EX pilot reduction cells at its Al Taweelah facility. This milestone is a key step towards proving the next generation of smelting technology, designed to enhance aluminium production while reducing energy consumption and emissions.
The EX technology incorporates advanced Industry 4.0 capabilities, leveraging the power of the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning to revolutionize the aluminium industry. By integrating more sensors and real-time data gathering, the system will enable autonomous control of key processes such as pots, cranes, and vehicles. This will improve efficiency, reduce disruptions, and optimize the overall production process, all while contributing to sustainability goals.
Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, CEO of EGA, emphasized the transformative impact of this project: “The construction of our EX pilot reduction cells is not just a technological milestone, it is the foundation for a future of smart solutions that will enhance efficiency and sustainability. Our bold goal is to create a self-optimizing, autonomous production system that leads the world in efficiency.”
The first hot metal from the pilot reduction cells is expected in the first half of 2025, with EGA targeting large-scale industrialization of EX technology, incorporating advanced Industry 4.0 capabilities, by 2028.
EGA has already implemented over 80 Industry 4.0 use cases, unlocking significant value in its operations. With the launch of the EX technology pilot, EGA is poised to further solidify its position as a leader in aluminium smelting innovation, with the ultimate goal of creating a smarter, more sustainable future for the industry.
