Supernova, a spinoff of BCN3D, has unveiled a new Defense and Space business unit dedicated to developing advanced additive manufacturing (AM) solutions for military-grade energetic materials. This strategic initiative aims to break new ground in manufacturing technologies for defense and space industries, focusing on critical applications like solid rocket motors (SRMs) for next-generation hypersonic platforms.
The new business unit leverages Supernova’s proprietary Viscous Lithography Manufacturing (VLM) technology, a breakthrough AM process that can handle high-viscosity materials with up to 100 times greater viscosity than conventional resins. This capability allows for the creation of 3D-printed parts with superior mechanical properties, overcoming the geometric limitations imposed by traditional manufacturing techniques such as casting and extrusion.
VLM is the first AM technology proven capable of processing military-grade materials like Ammonium Perchlorate Composite Propellant (APCP) and Cyclotrimethylene trinitramine (RDX). These energetic materials are essential for propellants and explosives but have traditionally been difficult to work with due to their high solid loads. Supernova’s VLM technology can process formulations with over 88% solid load, unlocking new possibilities in AM for defense applications.
Key benefits of this process include high-energy density, stable and homogeneous component properties, geometric freedom in design, rapid prototyping, and on-demand, on-shore production. The initial applications targeted by Supernova’s Defense and Space unit include enhancing combustion efficiency in SRMs, increasing detonation performance in explosives, and achieving higher velocity and reduced weight in bullet grains.
“Supernova Defense and Space represents our commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible to manufacture,” says Roger Antunez, founder and CEO of Supernova. “By pioneering 3D printing of energetic materials, we’re not just advancing technology; we’re equipping engineers with the tools to innovate and reshape the future of the defense and space industries.”
