Sandvik Coromant Revamps Tool Recycling Program for Enhanced Sustainability

Sandvik Coromant, a renowned expert in metal cutting and machine tools, is teaming up with the broader Sandvik Group to introduce an enhanced tool recycling initiative. This upgraded scheme builds upon the success of the existing buyback program, aiming to simplify the repurposing of worn carbide machine tools for customers while promoting material circularity throughout the supply chain. The company has been advocating for the recycling of cemented carbide for many years.

Since acquiring Wolfram Bergbau und Hütten, a leading producer of tungsten powder and tungsten carbide, in 1997, Sandvik has been operating a buyback program to recycle carbide material. This initiative, integral to Sandvik Coromant’s production cycle, allows customers to sell their worn-out tools back to the company, facilitating a closed loop in manufacturing.

With the recent enhancements to the program, Sandvik Coromant customers can expect a more efficient and data-driven recycling process. Through an online portal, customers can instantly receive quotes for the volume of recycled tools they wish to sell, schedule order pickups, and even track the environmental impact of their recycling efforts in terms of reduced carbon emissions.

To streamline logistics, Sandvik Coromant has partnered with market-specific carriers to manage tool transportation, allowing users to order containers, receive quotes, and book transport seamlessly. The overarching goal is to simplify the recycling process and make it as accessible as possible for customers.

Antonia Dåderman, Program Manager at Sandvik Coromant, emphasized the importance of sustainability, highlighting the significant percentage of carbide that can be recycled and the essential role of tungsten in cemented carbide. The upgraded recycling program aims to raise awareness among customers about the financial and environmental benefits of recycling, ultimately fostering a more sustainable manufacturing ecosystem.
