Rolls-Royce Submarines Ltd has signed the largest contract in its history with the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), a landmark agreement valued at approximately £9 billion. The eight-year ‘Unity’ contract will encompass all aspects of research and technology, design, manufacturing, and in-service support for the nuclear reactors powering the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet. This groundbreaking deal will also see Rolls-Royce continue to support the build and commissioning of Dreadnought Class submarines and contribute to the SSN-AUKUS programme.
The Unity contract represents a significant national investment by both the UK Government and industry, providing thousands of highly skilled jobs across the UK and marking a deepened commitment to the continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent. This long-term partnership is a first of its kind, aiming to create a more collaborative working relationship between Rolls-Royce and the MoD while ensuring the ongoing security of the nation.
Steve Carlier, President of Rolls-Royce Submarines, expressed the company’s pride in the contract: “This long-term agreement enables us to invest in the skills, equipment, and facilities required to meet the evolving needs of the Royal Navy. It marks a key milestone in our commitment to protecting UK interests, both at home and overseas, while enhancing reactor plant design and delivery.”
The contract is also expected to generate 1,000 new roles within Rolls-Royce Submarines by the end of the agreement, with job creation primarily in Derby, along with new offices in Glasgow and Cardiff. Rolls-Royce’s focus on nurturing a highly skilled national workforce is seen as essential for supporting the growing needs of the Royal Navy, while also contributing to the broader UK nuclear industry and driving economic growth.
Defence Secretary John Healey MP commented: “This historic deal with Rolls-Royce not only boosts British business and jobs but also strengthens our national security. It’s a clear demonstration of our commitment to the UK’s nuclear deterrent and our ability to deliver better value for taxpayers’ money.”
The Unity contract will further benefit the UK economy by enhancing collaboration within the supply chain, the majority of which is UK-based. The strategic relationships developed through the contract will bring long-term benefits, including more competition and capability within the sector.
Sir Chris Gardner KBE, CEO of the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA), added: “The Unity contract is a milestone in our partnership with Rolls-Royce, providing the resilience, collaboration, and capability needed to support the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet now and into the future. It ensures we have a secure pipeline of home-grown nuclear talent for the years ahead.”
