Rockwell Automation, Inc. (NYSE: ROK), the world’s largest company dedicated to industrial automation and digital transformation, is partnering with Drillmec, a global specialist in onshore and offshore drilling based in Italy, to develop innovative storage technologies.
Drillmec’s cutting-edge technology leverages data-driven intelligence and precision automation to create drilling ingress points for new carbon storage facilities more quickly, safely, and cost-effectively. This initiative supports Drillmec’s commitment to reducing emissions and achieving environmental goals through its expertise in drilling and rig operations.
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) involves trapping carbon emissions at their source—such as in factories—and then pumping the carbon to underground storage facilities where it is permanently sequestered, preventing atmospheric release.
Using Allen-Bradley PowerFlex TL XT 755 AC drives, Drillmec’s automated drilling system achieves greater precision and efficiency. This technology allows for faster creation of ingress points for carbon storage facilities while using fewer materials and less energy than previous systems. Increased automation and efficiency also reduce the number of staff required on site, lowering costs and enhancing safety.
Drillmec’s technology is versatile, suitable for both onshore and offshore applications. By reducing costs, it lowers barriers to entry for new carbon capture, usage, and storage (CCUS) facilities, potentially cutting emissions across various industrial and domestic sectors. Rockwell Automation has been integral in optimizing Drillmec’s drilling workflow for maximum efficiency and minimal emissions.
“Helping our partners in industry to improve sustainability and reduce emissions is one of Rockwell Automation’s guiding principles,” said Steffen Zendler, global business development manager – sustainability at Rockwell Automation. “This project does exactly that. We’re very pleased to be working with Drillmec to make carbon capture and storage not just possible, but technically and commercially attractive.”
“We are excited to be bringing to market this new drilling technology, specifically designed to enable the development of carbon capture and storage sites,” said Mohamed Housny, vice president of marketing at Drillmec. “Rockwell Automation technology and expertise has been central to achieving the intelligence, precision, and control required for the new technology to be a success. We look forward to continuing to work with Rockwell Automation on this and future projects.”
Drillmec is a global leader in designing, manufacturing, and distributing drilling and workover rigs for onshore and offshore applications, as well as a wide range of drilling equipment.
