Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL) is gearing up to launch its highly anticipated battery Gigafactory in Jamnagar, Gujarat, by the second half of 2026. This project, led by RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani, is poised to play a pivotal role in India’s green energy transition, focusing on the manufacturing of batteries and energy storage solutions.
The Gigafactory will boast an annual production capacity of 30 GWh, making it one of the largest battery manufacturing facilities in India. In its initial phase, the plant will assemble Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) designed for utility-scale, residential, commercial, and mobility markets. As the facility scales up, it will expand into cell manufacturing and the production of battery chemicals, positioning Reliance as a leader in advanced energy solutions.
Reliance’s venture into battery manufacturing is supported by the Indian government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for advanced chemistry cell battery production. The company has already secured 5 GWh capacity under this scheme and is bidding for an additional 10 GWh, enabling it to rapidly scale production to meet both domestic and global demand.
Reliance is also advancing sodium-ion battery technology in a forward-looking initiative, with plans to industrialize sodium-ion cell production at a megawatt scale by next year. This move underscores the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in energy storage.
The Gigafactory will draw on expertise from its subsidiaries, Lithium Werks and Faradion, to develop next-generation batteries focusing on safety, stability, and cost efficiency. By leveraging advanced electrochemical technologies, Reliance aims to produce batteries that meet diverse energy storage needs, from stationary applications to electric mobility.
