Icelandair, based in Keflavik, has taken delivery of its first Airbus aircraft, marking the beginning of the airline’s fleet renewal programme. The A321LR is the first of four Airbus A321LRs that Icelandair will lease from SMBC Aviation Capital Ltd. In addition to these, the airline is set to take delivery of 13 A321XLRs in the near future.
The A321LR, powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, features a two-class configuration with 187 seats, including 22 in business class and 165 in economy. The aircraft’s Airspace cabin is equipped with XL bins, offering 60% more stowage space compared to previous-generation aircraft, improving the boarding experience for both passengers and cabin crew. Additionally, the aircraft boasts advanced gate-to-gate connectivity, next-generation inflight entertainment, and a new lighting system designed to enhance passenger well-being and comfort.
Ideal for transatlantic routes, the A321LR has an extended range, capable of flying up to 4,000 nautical miles. This makes it an excellent choice for long-haul flights while delivering impressive fuel efficiency, offering at least 20% fuel savings and a reduction in CO2 emissions compared to older single-aisle aircraft. In line with Icelandair’s sustainability efforts, the A321LR is designed to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with a future goal of 100% SAF capability by 2030. This aligns with the airline’s commitment to operational efficiency and reducing its environmental impact.
Since its launch, more than 6,700 A321neo aircraft have been ordered by over 90 customers worldwide, further solidifying Airbus’ position in the global aviation market. Icelandair’s new A321LR is a significant step toward the airline’s fleet modernization and sustainability goals, offering both enhanced operational performance and a reduced environmental footprint.
