Nürtingen, Germany – This month marks the 130th anniversary of Hermann Heller’s establishment of a trading and manufacturing company specializing in patented products and watchmaking tools in Nürtingen. From its humble beginnings as a purveyor of various tools, the engineer laid the groundwork for the enduring prosperity of the company. In 1898, the venture expanded into the mechanical engineering realm with the production of cold circular saws for metal cutting and the crafting of blade skiving and thread cutting machines. The addition of Hermann Heller’s brother Ernst in 1900 heralded the birth of ‘Gebr. Heller Werkzeug- und Maschinenfabrik’ in Nürtingen.
Fast forward to the 1960s, where Hubert and Berndt Heller assumed leadership of the machine factory, steering the enterprise toward international acclaim. Under their stewardship, the company flourished into a globally renowned conglomerate with a presence in key markets, including England (Redditch) and Brazil (Sorocaba), both commemorating their 50th anniversaries this year.
Nevertheless, the journey for HELLER was not without challenges. “The era of the economic miracle was over, and we now had to assert ourselves in the field of tension between economic fluctuations and tougher competition,” reminisces Berndt Heller, the longstanding CEO and former Chairman of the Supervisory Board, reflecting on his early tenure in the family business.
The brothers’ penchant for innovation proved instrumental during trying times. In the 1990s, the development of modular machining centers and Flexible System Transferlines (FST) steered the company out of one of its gravest crises, reinvigorating its trajectory. “We achieved this with the help of our employees, who have always given their best, even in what have sometimes been difficult circumstances. They deserve my utmost respect and have played an important role in the company’s 130-year history,” Heller acknowledges.
Maintaining a steadfast commitment to tradition and innovation, the Heller family retains the essence of a family-run enterprise. Since 2016, the Group has been wholly owned by the family, with Berndt Heller’s children, Nicole Pfleiderer and Marc Heller, holding stakes in the company. Presently, the Group is helmed by Dr. Thorsten Schmidt (CEO), Andreas Müßigmann (CFO), Dieter Drechsler (COO), and Peter Weber (CSO).
Reflecting on this milestone, Schmidt remarks, “Today marks a significant day for HELLER as we celebrate 130 years of innovation. The remarkable success story authored by the HELLER team is a testament to their dedication and expertise. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all HELLER employees who contribute tirelessly to our company’s journey. Despite the challenges we face, we remain committed to continuing HELLER’s legacy as a trusted technology partner for our clients.”
