BMW Group UK Achieves Strong 2024 Performance with Significant Growth in Electric Vehicle Registrations

BMW Group UK has announced impressive combined registrations for its BMW and Mini brands, totaling 172,240 units in 2024, with over a quarter of these being fully electric vehicles. The BMW brand saw 125,265 registrations, marking a 12% increase and securing its position as the UK’s leading premium automotive brand with a 22.6% share of the premium sector. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 26.9% of BMW’s registrations, with the brand also leading the premium segment in plug-in hybrid vehicle registrations. Meanwhile, Mini registered 46,975 units, with BEV registrations soaring by 55% compared to 2023, reflecting the success of its new product family.

David George, CEO of BMW Group UK and Ireland, commented: “Our 2024 performance underscores the strength of our product lineup and the dedication of our retailer network. BMW’s leadership in the UK premium segment, coupled with over a quarter of our total registrations being fully electric, demonstrates the ongoing success driven by innovative products and exceptional customer experiences. Looking ahead, BMW will begin a new chapter in 2025 with the launch of the Neue Klasse, bringing groundbreaking technologies, striking design, and further advancing our electric mobility journey.”

The BMW i4 led the charge in electric sales, with 12,953 units registered, reflecting a 45% year-over-year increase. The BMW i5, launched in 2023, recorded 3,825 registrations, with strong uptake from corporate and fleet customers. The iX1 achieved 5,790 registrations, and the newly introduced BMW iX2, available for just 10 months, saw 2,819 units registered. BMW’s robust BEV portfolio now spans multiple vehicle segments, capturing 20.4% of the total premium BEV market in the UK and achieving an 18% increase in BEV registrations year-on-year.

BMW’s broader portfolio also showed significant growth. The BMW 1 Series, with over 24,450 registrations, was the brand’s best-seller in the UK, reflecting a 7% increase following a mid-year update. The BMW 3 Series saw a 31% rise in registrations, particularly benefiting from the enhanced 330e plug-in hybrid model. The luxury segment experienced remarkable growth, with a 48% increase in 7 Series registrations, including the all-electric BMW i7. The BMW XM, a luxury performance SUV, saw a staggering 184% increase in registrations.

BMW M models remained highly popular, with registrations reaching 17,191, a 7% increase from 2023. The refreshed BMW M2, with upgraded chassis technology and increased power, saw a 101% increase in demand, registering 1,505 units.

Mini’s all-electric lineup had a transformative year. The all-electric Mini Cooper, which launched in spring 2024, led the charge with 6,141 registrations in its first seven months. The new Mini Countryman, offering an all-electric variant for the first time, saw registrations increase by 7% to 12,342 units. The Mini Aceman, an all-new electric crossover, further strengthened the brand’s electrified offering.

David Beattie, Director of Mini UK and Ireland, said: “2024 has been a pivotal year for Mini, with the launch of our next-generation product family. The UK continues to be Mini’s most important market, and we are excited to see more customers than ever embracing fully electric Minis. We are looking forward to building on this momentum as we move into 2025 with the introduction of Mini’s first fully electric John Cooper Works performance models.”

BMW Group UK’s performance in 2024 reflects a significant shift towards electrification, with both brands showing strong growth in the BEV segment and a promising future ahead with upcoming model launches.
