General Motors said that by model year 2026, it will expand vehicle-to-home (V2H) bidirectional charging technology throughout its retail lineup of Ultium-based electric vehicles. The previously announced 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV RST will be the first vehicle to receive the technology, followed by the 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1, 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV, 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV, 2024 Cadillac LYRIQ, and the upcoming Cadillac ESCALADE IQ, which will be revealed on August 9.V2H adds value for EV owners by allowing them to move energy from their vehicles to a suitably fitted home when desired, building on the company’s ambition to supply a growing portfolio of energy management products and services through GM Energy. The technology enables people to store and transmit energy in order to offset electricity consumption during high-demand days and lessen the impact of power disruptions, making the transition to an all-electric future even more appealing.
“GM Energy’s growing ecosystem of energy management solutions will help accelerate GM’s vision of an all-electric future by further expanding access to even more benefits that EVs can offer,” said Wade Sheffer, vice president of GM Energy. “By incorporating V2H across our entire Ultium-based portfolio, we are making this game-changing technology available to more consumers, with benefits that extend far beyond the vehicle itself and on a larger scale than ever before.”
Customers can employ V2H technology on compatible GM EVs via GM Energy’s Ultium Home products and the GM Energy Cloud, a software platform allowing customers to control energy transfer between applicable and linked GM Energy assets and the home. This announcement highlights GM’s comprehensive approach to energy management, harnessing Ultium’s power to deliver new technologies and creative services for home consumers. Creating Ultium Home solutions that work with GM’s increasing line of EVs gives customers more options and value across car categories and price points than ever before. Future updates will include information on the additional availability of V2H technology as well as the exact timing of V2H rollout to certain car types.
