Canada is investing in the manufacture of battery materials for Ford automobiles.

A $644 million government grant will be used to build a battery materials production plant in Bécancour. A collaboration led by Ford Motor Company and South Korean firms EcoProBM and SK On will construct this facility. This project, worth more than $1.2 billion, will create over 345 jobs. The EcoPro CAM Canada factory will annually generate 45,000 tonnes of cathode active materials. The materials will be used to manufacture batteries for Ford’s future electric automobiles. The plant is expected to open for business in the first half of 2026.

“The arrival of Ford and the EcoPro CAM Canada consortium in the Vallée de la transition énergétique innovation zone is another major step forward in advancing the establishment of the battery sector,” said Pierre Fitzgibbon, Minister of Economy, Innovation, and Energy, Minister Responsible for Regional Economic Development, and Minister Responsible for the Metropolis and the Montréal Region. “We’re sending a clear message: with its natural resources and clean energy, Quebec is one of the most appealing places in the world for global leaders in this future industry.”The money is split as follows: the Government of Canada is making a $322 million conditional commitment through the Strategic Innovation Fund, and the Government of Quebec is providing a $322 million partially forgiven loan through Investissement Québec.
