SME Focus Episode 220: Nicole Ballentyne
SMEFocus is the programme showcasing our brilliant SMEs. For manufacturers, by manufacturers. The weekly show was…
Founded in 1923 by Claude Knuepfer, DuPage Machine Products (DMP) has thrived for over a century by embracing innovation and adapting to evolving market demands. Originally inspired by General Engineering Works, DMP has maintained its leadership position through continuous investment in technology and an unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction.
Dave Knuepfer, DMP’s third-generation president and CEO, credits the company’s success to its progressive culture and readiness to adapt. “We’ve always embraced new technology and adapted to our customers’ needs,” says Knuepfer. “It’s important not to get stuck doing the same thing. We want to be the company that’s always moving forward.”
This mindset has positioned DMP as a dynamic player in the precision machining industry, producing increasingly complex parts over the years. With a facility spanning 245,000 square feet, the Bloomingdale, Illinois-based company has invested in cutting-edge capabilities, making it a preferred partner for customers across various industries, including automotive, aerospace, hydraulics, and medical.
DMP’s journey has mirrored the broader trends of the precision machining industry, which has shifted from manual to automated processes. The company was an early adopter of multi-spindle CNC machines, which became a key element in driving growth. Today, DMP operates 18 Index CNC multi-spindles, with the ability to handle bar diameters ranging from 22 mm to 52 mm. These advanced machines allow DMP to produce highly complex parts with up to 200 dimensions, all while maintaining tight tolerances. “We couldn’t produce such complex parts in a single operation without these machines,” says Dave Knuepfer, Jr., DMP’s vice president of operations.
Investing in technology has been a central theme throughout DMP’s history. In 2002, the company took a leap of faith by purchasing its first Index CNC multi-spindle, despite not having immediate work to justify the investment. This decision paid off when the company secured larger, more sophisticated orders. “We went from producing 5,000-piece orders to handling 50,000-piece orders for some of our customers,” says Bill Knuepfer, DMP’s sales manager. This growth allowed DMP to serve customers with needs ranging from small batch one-offs to orders exceeding a million parts annually.
DMP’s philosophy extends beyond machinery, focusing on vertical integration to control every step of the manufacturing process. From heat treatment and thermal deburring to laser marking and assembly, the company performs many secondary processes in-house. This approach significantly reduces lead times for customers and ensures high-quality results. “When we can do something in-house, we invest in the capabilities to make it happen,” says Dave Jr.
The company’s growth reached a new milestone in 2020 when DMP nearly doubled the size of its operations with a 120,000-square-foot expansion. This increased capacity allows DMP to remain agile and responsive to changing customer needs, even in a volatile market. Recent investments in double-synchronous spindle technology and five-axis milling machines further demonstrate DMP’s commitment to continuous improvement.
In addition to its state-of-the-art machinery and internal capabilities, DMP remains closely aligned with the Precision Machined Products Association (PMPA). The Knuepfer family has played a prominent role in the organization, with multiple family members serving as PMPA presidents and receiving the prestigious McGinnis Merit Award. The fourth generation of the Knuepfer family, including Dave Knuepfer, Jr. and Bill Knuepfer, is actively involved in the business, ensuring that DMP’s legacy of excellence continues.
As DMP celebrates a century in business, it remains committed to its founding principles: embracing technology, fostering innovation, and prioritizing customer success. “Our customers bring us challenges, and we do what it takes to deliver the results they need,” says Dave Jr. “As they grow, we grow with them, and that’s what drives us forward.”
With its cutting-edge capabilities, customer-centric philosophy, and rich history of leadership in the precision machining industry, DuPage Machine Products is well-positioned to continue thriving for the next century.
