GAIL and Cummins Forge Partnership to Advance Hydrogen and Energy Transition!

GAIL (India) Limited has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Accelera by Cummins, aiming to advance hydrogen and energy transition technologies in India. The agreement, unveiled at India Energy Week 2025, focuses on exploring key opportunities in hydrogen production, blending, transportation, and storage. By combining GAIL’s extensive natural gas infrastructure with Cummins’ expertise in clean energy solutions, this partnership aims to accelerate the growth of India’s hydrogen economy.

GAIL has been at the forefront of hydrogen adoption in India, actively investing in hydrogen projects. Notably, the company commissioned a 10 MW green hydrogen plant in Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh, in April 2024, utilizing an electrolyser supplied by Accelera by Cummins. GAIL has also initiated blending hydrogen into its city gas distribution networks via its joint venture Avantika. The company has successfully conducted pilot-scale studies with a 5% hydrogen blend in pipeline natural gas. Additionally, GAIL has revised its Scope 1 and Scope 2 net-zero targets from 2040 to 2035, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and the transition to a cleaner energy mix.

Cummins Inc., a global leader in clean energy solutions, brings its expertise in advanced powertrains across diesel, natural gas, electric, and hybrid systems. The company is also advancing hydrogen production technologies and fuel cells. Through this collaboration with GAIL, Cummins will help foster hydrogen adoption in key sectors, including transportation, power, and steel, while exploring hydrogen as both a standalone fuel and in blends with LNG, CNG, and natural gas.

Beyond hydrogen, GAIL is expanding its footprint in the renewable energy space. The company has launched a 5 TPD compressed biogas (CBG) plant in Ranchi and plans to set up 26 more CBG plants in the coming years. In partnership with Leafiniti Bioenergy, GAIL is focused on developing 10 CBG plants, while another venture is dedicated to building a 500 KLPD grain-based ethanol plant in Rajasthan. Moreover, GAIL is collaborating with Coal India to produce synthetic natural gas in West Bengal.

Through this strategic partnership, GAIL and Cummins are well-positioned to play a key role in India’s energy transition, driving hydrogen adoption and supporting the country’s clean energy and sustainability goals.
