Thomson Industries Introduces Movotrak Cobot Transfer Unit with Collision Detection!

Thomson Industries Inc. has unveiled the Movotrak Cobot Transfer Unit (CTU), a groundbreaking extension for collaborative robots (cobots). Designed as a “seventh axis,” the Movotrak CTU offers collision detection capabilities, allowing the cobot to stop immediately when encountering obstacles. This innovative feature promotes safer collaboration between humans and cobots while enhancing productivity.

The Movotrak CTU extends a cobot’s horizontal operating range by up to 10 meters, enabling greater versatility in automated workflows. Its collision detection system is a standout feature, continuously monitoring motor current and position errors to ensure precise anti-collision functionality. The system also includes a reverse-move feature, eliminating pinch points and ensuring operator safety after a stop.

Users can easily adjust collision sensitivity settings via a control tablet, allowing customized programming based on the application. The collision monitoring and shutdown logic are managed directly within the Thomson drive, reducing bandwidth competition with the cobot’s main controls and ensuring seamless integration.

The Movotrak CTU integrates with various cobot brands and sizes, including Universal Robots (UR). Its compatibility with URCap interfaces allows programming directly through the UR Teach Pendant. The unit also supports free drive functionality, enabling users to manually slide the cobot along the seventh axis to set linear waypoints with ease.

Built for strength and adaptability, the Movotrak CTU features a dual-linear unit solution that delivers exceptional load capacity and stiffness. It can be mounted horizontally, inverted, or on walls, making it ideal for a wide range of industrial environments. The system is also compatible with larger cobots, such as the UR20 and UR30, further extending its applications.

The Movotrak CTU represents a significant step forward in cobot automation, combining increased range, advanced safety features, and user-friendly programming. By enabling cobots to move seamlessly across multiple task locations, the Movotrak CTU empowers manufacturers to enhance efficiency, flexibility, and safety in their operations.

This innovative solution solidifies Thomson Industries’ position as a leader in automation technology, addressing the evolving needs of industries that rely on collaborative robots for advanced manufacturing and logistics tasks.
