Eurojet Turbo GmBH, the consortium behind the EJ200 engines used in the Eurofighter Typhoon, has signed a contract with the NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency (NETMA) to supply 59 new EJ200 engines for the Spanish Air Force. The agreement, which was finalized at Getafe Air Force Base in Madrid, marks the second phase of the Halcón acquisition project for Spain’s fleet of Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets.
The EJ200 engine, developed through collaboration between Rolls-Royce, MTU Aero Engines, ITP Aero, and Avio Aero, has been recognized for its outstanding performance since its first production delivery. Rolls-Royce will continue its crucial role in the engine’s module production, leveraging its extensive expertise and innovation to meet the Spanish Air Force’s operational needs.
The contract was officially signed by Air Vice Marshall Simon Ellard (ret.), general manager of NETMA; Ralf Breiling, CEO of Eurojet; and other key stakeholders. The 59 engines will be assembled at ITP Aero’s Ajalvir facility, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2029.
The EJ200 engine has a proven track record with more than 1,400 units delivered to air forces across nine nations, accumulating over 1.5 million engine flying hours since the first production engine was delivered in 2003. Renowned for its superior performance, multi-role capabilities, and competitive life-cycle costs, the EJ200 is seen as an ideal solution to meet the Spanish Air Force’s future operational requirements.
Chris Davie, Rolls-Royce director of UK and international mature programmes, emphasized the company’s pride in supporting the Eurojet consortium. “The EJ200 represents innovative capabilities that ensure our allies maintain their operational edge,” he stated. “This contract reflects the confidence placed in our technology and strengthens our commitment to supporting operational readiness for modern air forces.”
Ralf Breiling also highlighted the long-standing trust in the EJ200 engine, noting that the order reinforces the strong partnership between European industry and governments. “The EJ200 provides a world-class, combat-proven asset for the Spanish Air Force,” he said, further underscoring the importance of the Eurofighter Typhoon in Europe’s defense strategy.
Air Vice Marshall Simon Ellard concluded, “This contract finalizes a successful collaborative procurement effort that ensures Spain’s continued access to cutting-edge technology. The EJ200 engine is a key asset in securing NATO’s deterrence capabilities and maintaining air superiority.”
