SparkFun Electronics and 3D Printing Nerd have joined forces to meet the growing demand for the Experiential Robotics Platform (XRP), an accessible and affordable educational tool for robotics enthusiasts and learners. SparkFun, known for designing the XRP’s controller board and assembling the kits, is a member of the XRP Consortium – a collective of organizations dedicated to advancing STEM education through innovative robotics solutions.
3D Printing Nerd, a prominent advocate for 3D printing education, brings its expertise in additive manufacturing and a robust print farm to produce XRP’s chassis at scale. This partnership enables both companies to meet increasing production demands while maintaining the quality and accessibility that define their brands.
The collaboration underscores a mutual commitment to providing hands-on learning opportunities in electronics, robotics, and engineering. With a focus on creating affordable, open-source solutions, both companies aim to make STEM education more accessible. Their combined reputations for offering free educational content and documentation highlight their alignment in audience engagement and mission-driven initiatives.
“We are thrilled to announce our partnership with 3D Printing Nerd,” said Jahnell Pereira, CBDO of SparkFun Electronics. “This partnership will enhance our XRP Project by leveraging 3D Printing Nerd’s expertise in additive manufacturing, ensuring high-quality chassis and plastic components. Together, we aim to deliver superior educational content and scale our production capabilities, benefiting both organizations and our community.”
The widespread adoption of the XRP reflects the growing need for low-cost, versatile robotics platforms in classrooms, robotics competitions like FIRST, and government-led educational programs. The decision to use additive manufacturing, instead of traditional injection molding, demonstrates both the cost-efficiency of the platform and the production capacity of 3D Printing Nerd.
As students and learners engage with the XRP, they gain valuable hands-on experience in robotics concepts, electronics, and programming. By addressing the evolving needs of the next generation of engineers and innovators, SparkFun and 3D Printing Nerd are creating pathways to deeper understanding and practical skills in STEM.
This partnership not only scales the XRP project but also reinforces the mission of both organizations to empower educators, students, and hobbyists to explore the world of robotics and engineering.
