MAHLE has entered into a groundbreaking partnership with MAN Truck & Bus, securing a pivotal contract to supply critical engine components for the hydrogen-powered “MAN hTGX” truck. This zero-emission truck, which recently won the prestigious Truck Innovation Award 2025, features a 6-cylinder hydrogen engine with a displacement of 16.8 litres and an output of 383 kW.
The MAHLE-supplied power cell unit (PCU) is integral to the truck’s hydrogen engine, comprising advanced components such as pistons, piston rings, piston pins, and cylinder liners. In addition, MAHLE will provide components for the truck’s valve train system. The partnership marks a significant milestone in the decarbonization of the commercial vehicle sector, with MAN Truck & Bus planning to produce approximately 200 units of the hydrogen-powered truck for select markets by 2025.
Dr. Roger Busch, Head of Sales at MAHLE, emphasized the company’s expertise in internal combustion engines, saying, “Our modern engine components make hydrogen-powered combustion engines a reality, meeting customer expectations for performance, efficiency, and durability.” MAHLE’s hydrogen solutions have been rigorously tested at the company’s hydrogen test centre in Stuttgart, ensuring the components’ readiness for large-scale production. Key advancements, including reduced oil consumption and minimized hydrogen leakage, demonstrate the reliability and efficiency of the hydrogen engine.
Hydrogen-powered vehicles are seen as a critical element in achieving transportation decarbonization. MAHLE’s ongoing focus on hydrogen technologies, including both internal combustion engine components and fuel cell solutions, reinforces its commitment to sustainable transportation. With nearly 30 hydrogen engine projects currently underway, MAHLE continues to play a pivotal role in advancing the future of hydrogen-powered mobility.
The collaboration with MAN Truck & Bus is a significant step toward broadening the acceptance of hydrogen technology in commercial vehicles, with the first series of hydrogen-powered trucks expected to launch in 2025. This partnership solidifies MAHLE’s position as a key player in the global transition to sustainable, zero-emission transportation.
