IIT Bombay Partners with ABB India to Establish Advanced Electrical Machines & Drives Lab!

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) has joined forces with ABB India to launch a state-of-the-art teaching laboratory for electrical machines and drives at its Department of Energy Science and Engineering. This collaboration aims to equip undergraduate and postgraduate students with hands-on experience using modern industrial equipment, preparing them for future roles in the evolving energy and industrial sectors while promoting environmental sustainability.

The cutting-edge lab will be equipped with energy-efficient, mechanically coupled electrical machine sets, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and programmable logic controllers (PLCs), providing students with practical training in electrical machines and drives. The facility will simulate industrial applications, including those used in wind turbines and electric vehicle drivetrains, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of modern energy systems.

Sanjeev Arora, President of the Motion Business at ABB India, commented on the partnership, stating, “We are honored to collaborate with IIT Bombay to support the development of future engineers who will address the industrial sector’s evolving demands with a focus on energy efficiency and conservation. The advanced technologies in this lab are designed with sustainability in mind, ensuring that future engineers prioritize resource efficiency in their work.”

Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay, highlighted the importance of the partnership, saying, “This collaboration with ABB India marks a significant milestone in empowering our students with cutting-edge technical expertise and a thorough understanding of sustainable energy systems. The lab will offer immersive, hands-on training that mirrors real-world industrial applications, preparing our students to lead the way in energy efficiency and environmental stewardship, shaping a more sustainable future.”
