US and India Set to Establish World’s First Multi-Chip Fabrication Unit in Jewar, UP!

In a historic partnership, the United States and India have agreed to establish the world’s first multi-material semiconductor fabrication unit in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh. This initiative, spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joe Biden, marks a significant step forward in both countries’ efforts to bolster national security through advanced technological capabilities.

The semiconductor plant will produce critical components for high-tech warfare and defense technologies, including night vision devices, missile guidance systems, space sensors, drones, fighter aircraft, electric vehicles, and military communication systems. This will serve to significantly enhance India’s defense manufacturing capabilities.

Located near the upcoming Jewar Airport, the facility will include not only fabrication units but also a testing center, a center of excellence, and a design hub. The technology transfer expected from this collaboration will reduce India’s reliance on semiconductor imports for national security needs, projected to save the country approximately Rs 60 billion annually through import substitution.

This development is a cornerstone of the growing strategic collaboration between the two nations, particularly under the Indo-Pacific Economic Corridor (ICET) and the US CHIPS Act. With support from the US Space Force, India’s Semiconductor Mission, and Indian firms such as Bharat Semiconductors and 3ediTech, the facility—likely to be named “Shakti”—will place India at the forefront of global semiconductor manufacturing.

This agreement highlights the deepening technological and defense ties between India and the US, ensuring that both nations are well-equipped to meet future challenges in semiconductor production and national defense.
