Tata Electronics is set to make a significant impact on India’s semiconductor industry with the establishment of its first chip assembly and testing unit at Jagi Road, Assam. The groundbreaking ceremony, scheduled for Saturday morning, will be attended by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran. This development marks Assam as a critical player in the global semiconductor supply chain.
The ₹27,000 crore greenfield facility will not only enhance India’s semiconductor capabilities but also provide a substantial economic boost by creating over 27,000 direct and indirect jobs. This project follows the Union Cabinet’s approval of three semiconductor plant proposals in February, which include facilities in Gujarat and Assam, valued at ₹1.26 lakh crore.
Tata Electronics is also making strides in Gujarat with the construction of India’s first semiconductor fabrication plant, in partnership with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. (PSMC), with an investment of ₹91,000 crore in Dholera.
In Assam, the Tata OSAT (Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test) facility will focus on advanced packaging technologies such as Wire Bond, Flip Chip, and Integrated Systems Packaging (ISP). With ambitious plans to evolve its technological capabilities, the facility positions Assam as a pivotal contributor to India’s growing semiconductor ecosystem.
